Fri 2 Oct
Five New York rooms you can sit in tonight.
Five rooms where Friday dinner needs no plan: two take walk-ins only, three keep seats the booking grid never touches. The East Village bar pours to 2am; the Queens kitchen seats until eleven.
We never hold, resell or book a table. Availability moves minute to minute, so go early rather than late.
Rolo's
Ridgewood
A soaring former glass factory in deepest Ridgewood, wood-fired everything — the patty melt has a cult, the pastas change with the market, and the room hums like a neighborhood that got lucky. The trek to Onderdonk Avenue is the price; the table is the reward.
The way in
walk in — the kitchen holds tables and bar seats for walk-in parties even on weekends, first come first served
Why we say so
Their own site states "We always set aside tables and our bar for walk-in diners," with dinner listed Friday and Saturday from 5pm to 11pm on the same page.
Bar Goto
Lower East Side
Kenta Goto's tiny sake-and-cocktail bar on Eldridge Street — a carved sakura flower sits in the bottom of the Sakura Martini, and the room is ten seats of hushed precision. A Friday night cap that outclasses most tasting menus.
The way in
walk in only — no reservations exist here at all, first come first served, so arrive early or be ready to wait at the door
Why we say so
Their own site states "Walk-ins only; first come, first served," with hours of 5pm to 2am on Fridays on the same page.
Wildair
Lower East Side
The Orchard Street little sibling of Contra, pouring a wine list built for drinking and plates built for wanting — smoked trout roe and cultured cream, wagyu tartare on a fry. Loud, young, and generous at the pass.
The way in
walk in — the room keeps its seats for walk-in parties and only asks that you book through OpenTable if you insist on a plan
Why we say so
Their own reservations page states "WALK-INS WELCOME, RESERVATIONS THROUGH OPENTABLE," with dinner Tuesday to Saturday, 5:30pm to 10pm, on the same page.
Suzume
Williamsburg
A narrow Japanese izakaya on a McCarren Park corner, all warm wood and glowing paper — robata-skewered things, house shokupan with ikura, and a sake list that reads like a friend's recommendation. A Friday counter that never asks for a card.
The way in
walk in — the room welcomes walk-in parties every night and keeps a waitlist for walk-ins at the door
Why we say so
Their own site states "Walk-ins always welcome," with dinner listed for Friday from 5pm to 11pm on the same page.
Bar Pisellino
West Village
A pocket-sized European bar room on Grove Street, marble and brass and an espresso machine with a queue — aperitivi, cicchetti and a short, right wine list on one of the loveliest corners in the Village. Come for the spritz, stay for the anchovy crostino.
The way in
walk in — the bar takes no reservations at all, first come first served, from morning coffee through late-evening bitters
Why we say so
Their own site states "SENZA PRENOTAZIONE — NO RESERVATIONS," with the room open daily to 11pm on the same page.
None of these work tonight? Tell us what does — $12.
Your party, your neighborhood, your hour. One person researches tonight and sends three to five rooms with the way in, under 10 minutes.
We loaded every one of these pages ourselves before writing this. Check their hours again before you put your coat on.
That’s tonight. Coat, keys, go.
