Five New York rooms you can sit in tonight.
Two new rooms tonight and three return guests, every line re-read at each room’s own site this afternoon. A café that belongs to whoever walks in joins a pizza-and-a-pour bar in Greenpoint, an Australian cafe-room that closes the book on weekends, a Ridgewood dining room that saves its tables for the door, and a chicken-and-wine bar where the patio never took a booking in its life. Saturday night, no card and no login — the door is the reservation.
We never hold, resell or book a table. Availability moves minute to minute, so go early rather than late.
Café Maud
Upper East Side
A corner café-restaurant at 84th and Second with a walk-up coffee window on the sidewalk, weekend brunch that never stops, and a staircase up to The Domino Room for one more round. On an avenue of booked tables, this one simply belongs to whoever walks in.
The way in
walk in — no reservations are taken at 1640 2nd ave; just walk in any time the doors are open, and tonight they are open late, to 4am
Why we say so
Their own site states "Walk-ins only — no reservations. We don’t take online reservations at 1640 2nd Ave — just walk in any time we’re open," with Saturday–Sunday hours of 8am to 4am on the same page. Their East Village sibling takes Resy; this page is the Yorkville room.
Me and Paul's
Greenpoint
The walk-in bar in the Paulie Gee's family — wood-fired Neapolitan pies landing from a kitchen a few steps away, a proper pour behind the bar, and nothing standing between you and a stool but the sidewalk. The Saturday that starts here rarely stays quiet.
The way in
walk in — the room takes no bookings at all; walk-ins only, until 2am
Why we say so
Their own site states "Walk-ins Only." beside hours of 12pm to 2am Friday–Sunday for the Greenpoint room — re-read at their site today.
Ruby's
Nolita
An Australian cafe-room on Mulberry Street since 2002 — bright windows, easy pastas, the Bronte burger people cross the bridge for, and a nine-o'clock brekkie for whoever stayed out too late the night before. On weekend nights the booking book simply closes.
The way in
walk in — no reservations are taken on Friday, Saturday or Sunday; every seat is first come, first served until 11pm
Why we say so
Their own site states "We do not take reservations on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday. We seat guests on a first-come, first-served basis," open 9am to 11pm daily — re-read at their site today.
Rolo's
Ridgewood
A soaring former glass factory on Onderdonk Avenue, wood-fired everything — the patty melt has a cult, the pastas change with the market, and the room hums like a neighborhood that got lucky. The trek to Ridgewood is the price; the table is the reward.
The way in
walk in — the kitchen holds tables and bar seats for walk-in parties even on weekends, first come first served, from 5 to 11
Why we say so
Their own site states "We always set aside tables and our bar for walk-in diners," with dinner listed "friday & saturday from 5–11pm" — re-read at their site today.
The Fly
Bed-Stuy
The family behind the seafood counters runs this chicken-and-wine bar on Classon Avenue — rotisserie bird with all the fixings, Slovenian skin-contact by the glass, and a patio in full October swing. It has never taken a booking in its life.
The way in
walk in — the seats are first come first serve for walk in only, and the room mostly saves its tables and bar for walk-ins; open tonight until midnight
Why we say so
Their own site states the seats are "always first come first serve for walk in only," that they "mostly save room for walk ins at our tables and bar," and that they are open "Fri & Saturday until Midnight" — re-read at their site today.
None of these work tonight? Tell us what does — $12.
Your party, your neighborhood, your hour. One person researches tonight and sends three to five rooms with the way in, under 10 minutes.
We loaded every one of these pages ourselves before writing this. Check their hours again before you put your coat on.
That’s tonight. Coat, keys, go.
