Tablenight

Sun 11 Oct

This was Sunday, October 11.

One new room tonight and four return guests, every line re-read at each room’s own site this afternoon. A Hudson-side park café where every table answers to the queue joins a Yorkville room that keeps its lights on to 4am, an Australian cafe-room that closes its booking book on weekends, a Greenpoint walk-in bar firing pies until 2am, and a Red Hook smokehouse that seats its counter until the day’s smoke is gone. Sunday night, no card and no login — the door is the reservation.

We never hold, resell or book a table. Availability moves minute to minute, so go early rather than late.

Ellington in the Park

Upper West Side

An open-air café and bar set inside Riverside Park at 105th, on the Hudson itself — drinks and dinner over the water, picnic-table ease, and the whole room open to the October air. In a neighborhood of booked dining rooms, this one belongs to the park and to whoever is standing in it.

The way in

walk in — no reservations are taken; every table is first come, first served, and the doors run 11am to 11pm today

Why we say so

Their own site states "We do not take reservations at Ellington in the Park" and "Tables are on a first come first served basis," with opening hours of 11am to 11pm all seven days and the season printed as "open daily April through November" — re-read at their site today. If it pours, they post hour updates on Instagram; their Broadway sibling is a different room and books on Resy.

Café Maud

Upper East Side

A corner café-restaurant at 84th and Second with a walk-up coffee window on the sidewalk, weekend brunch that never stops, and a staircase up to The Domino Room for one more round. On an avenue of booked tables, this one simply belongs to whoever walks in.

The way in

walk in — no reservations are taken at 1640 2nd ave; just walk in any time the doors are open, and on Sundays they are open from 8am straight through to 4am

Why we say so

Their own site states "Walk-ins only — no reservations. We don’t take online reservations at 1640 2nd Ave — just walk in any time we’re open," with Saturday–Sunday hours of 8am to 4am on the same page — re-read at their site today. Their East Village sibling takes Resy; this page is the Yorkville room.

Ruby's

Nolita

An Australian cafe-room on Mulberry Street since 2002 — bright windows, easy pastas, the Bronte burger people cross the bridge for, and a nine-o’clock brekkie for whoever stayed out too late the night before. On weekend nights the booking book simply closes.

The way in

walk in — no reservations are taken on Friday, Saturday or Sunday; every seat is first come, first served until 11pm

Why we say so

Their own site states "We do not take reservations on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday. We seat guests on a first-come, first-served basis," open 9am to 11pm daily — re-read at their site today.

Me and Paul's

Greenpoint

The walk-in bar in the Paulie Gee's family — wood-fired Neapolitan pies landing from a kitchen a few steps away, a proper pour behind the bar, and nothing standing between you and a stool but the sidewalk. The Sunday that starts here rarely stays quiet.

The way in

walk in — the room takes no bookings at all; walk-ins only, from noon until 2am today

Why we say so

Their own site states "Walk-ins Only." beside hours of 12pm to 2am Friday–Sunday for the Greenpoint room — re-read at their site today.

Hometown Bar-B-Que

Red Hook

The Red Hook smokehouse by the water — brisket by the pound, Korean-engineered pork belly tacos, picnic tables under string lights and the smell of oak for blocks. A counter that answers to nobody’s booking app, only to the pull of the day’s brisket.

The way in

walk in — the counter runs first come, first served until the day’s smoked offerings sell out, and on Sundays it runs noon to 10pm

Why we say so

Their own site states "we offer walk-up service to our counter on a first-come, first-served basis—until we sell out of that day’s specially cooked offerings," with hours "Sunday Noon – 10 pm" — re-read at their site today.
