Fri 16 Oct
This was Friday, October 16.
Five return guests tonight, every policy line re-read at each room’s own site this afternoon. An oyster bar on Bedford Avenue where the bar itself belongs to whoever walks in, a Greenpoint dive that is walk-ins only by its own sign, a Red Hook smokehouse whose counter serves the line until the day’s cook sells out, a Delancey Street soba shop that refuses reservations outright, and the Nolita café that stops taking bookings the moment Friday arrives. Friday night, no card and no login — the door is the reservation.
We never hold, resell or book a table. Availability moves minute to minute, so go early rather than late.
Maison Premiere
Williamsburg
The 2011 oyster-and-absinthe room at Bedford Avenue and South 1st — a tin ceiling, a long marble bar, oysters on ice, and one of the deepest rye shelves in the borough. The greenhouse out back books for parties; the bar itself answers to whoever walks up to it.
The way in
walk in — the bar welcomes whoever walks in, Friday bar hours run noon to 2am, and the full menu is served until 10:30pm
Why we say so
Their own site states “Walk-ins are always welcome at the bar, as well as in the dining room, depending on availability,” and their contact page prints bar hours of “Friday 12 p.m. – 2 a.m.” — re-read at both pages today. The dining room and garden do book, so the way in tonight is the bar.
Me and Paul's
Greenpoint
The neighborhood dive at 60 Greenpoint Avenue pouring strong and cheap, with Paulie Gee’s wood-fired pizza coming out of the oven in back — pool-table ease, old taps, and the kind of room that has never owned a booking book because it never needed one.
The way in
walk in — the room is walk-ins only, and Friday runs noon to 2am alongside the rest of the weekend
Why we say so
Their own page prints “Walk-ins Only.” and hours of “Open 2 pm to 2 am Monday-Thursday and 12 pm to 2 am Friday – Sunday” — re-read at their site today.
Hometown Bar-B-Que
Red Hook
The warehouse smokehouse at the end of Van Brunt Street — Texas-style brisket, pork belly with pickles, and two long bars to wait at with a drink while live music plays on weekend nights. The counter serves whoever is standing in it until the day’s cook is gone.
The way in
walk in — walk-up service to the counter is first come, first served, Friday runs noon to 10pm, and when the barbecue sells out, it sells out
Why we say so
Their own site states “we offer walk-up service to our counter on a first-come, first-served basis—until we sell out of that day’s specially cooked offerings,” and posts “Friday and Saturday Noon – 10pm” — re-read at their site today.
Cocoron
Lower East Side
The little soba shop on Delancey Street where the noodles are cut and cooked to order and the counter is close enough to watch it all happen — soba dipped, broth slurped, done. The house line on the door is plain: no reservations are accepted, so every seat is a walk-in seat.
The way in
walk in — no reservations are accepted at all, and today runs 12pm to 3:10pm and 5pm to 10:30pm with last order at 10pm
Why we say so
Their own contact page states “No reservations are accepted at cocoron,” and their location page prints hours of “12:00pm - 3:10pm” and “5:00pm - 10:30pm (L.O. 10:00pm)” for the 16 Delancey shop, open every day — re-read at both pages today.
Ruby's
Nolita
The Mulberry Street café that splits its week in two — bookings Monday through Thursday, and from Friday onward the whole room belongs to the queue. Flat whites and ricotta toast in the morning, a glass of wine and Mulberry people-watching after dark.
The way in
walk in — the house takes no reservations on Friday, seating is first come, first served, and doors run 9am to 11pm today
Why we say so
Their own SoHo page states “We do not take reservations on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday. We seat guests on a first-come, first-served basis” with hours of “Open 9AM - 11PM daily” — re-read at their site today.
None of these work tonight? Tell us what does — $12.
Your party, your neighborhood, your hour. One person researches tonight and sends three to five rooms with the way in, under 10 minutes.
We loaded every one of these pages ourselves before writing this. Check their hours again before you put your coat on.
Tonight’s five are here.
