Sat 17 Oct
This was Saturday, October 17.
Five return guests tonight, every policy line re-read at each room’s own site this afternoon. A Second Avenue café that takes no bookings at all and keeps its doors open until 4am, the Prince Street bistro whose bar belongs to the queue, the Grove Street osteria with walk-ins welcome over its door, a Classon Avenue chicken-and-wine bar pouring until midnight, and a horseshoe bar in Long Island City with no booking system anywhere on its site. Saturday night, no card and no login — the door is the reservation.
We never hold, resell or book a table. Availability moves minute to minute, so go early rather than late.
Café Maud
Upper East Side
A corner café-restaurant at 84th and Second with a walk-up coffee window on the sidewalk, weekend brunch that never stops, and a staircase up to The Domino Room for one more round. On an avenue of booked tables, this one simply belongs to whoever walks in.
The way in
walk in — the room is walk-ins only with no reservations needed, and tonight it keeps its doors open from 8am until 4am
Why we say so
Their own Upper East Side page states “Walk-ins only — no reservations needed,” with hours of “Saturday – Sunday 8am – 4am” on the same page. Their East Village sibling takes Resy; this page is the Yorkville room.
Via Carota
West Village
The Grove Street osteria that rewrote how New York eats Italian — vegetable antipasti, cacio e pepe cut thick, a bellini at the bar while the room hums under dried flowers. On Saturday it opens at ten in the morning and hums straight through until eleven at night.
The way in
walk in — the osteria keeps no reservation book and says simply “walk-ins welcome”, with Saturday service running 10am to 11pm
Why we say so
Their own site prints “WALK-INS WELCOME” and a schedule that lists Saturday as “10am- 11pm” — re-read at their site today.
Raoul's
SoHo
The old French bistro on Prince Street where the dining room belongs to Resy and the bar belongs to the street — 12 burgers au poivre a night, served at the bar only, to whoever is sitting there when the kitchen calls them. A Saturday stool here is the hardest free seat in SoHo and the best.
The way in
walk in — the bar is seated first come, first served at all times; the bar opens at 5pm and the twelve burgers of the night are bar-only
Why we say so
Their own site states “The bar is seated on a first come, first served basis at all times,” and “Our bar opens at 5pm our kitchen opens at 5:15pm,” with Saturday brunch listed from 11:00am to 2:30pm — re-read at their site today.
The Fly
Bedford-Stuyvesant
The family behind the seafood counters runs this chicken-and-wine bar on Classon Avenue — rotisserie bird with all the fixings, Slovenian skin-contact by the glass, and a patio in full October swing. It has never taken a booking in its life.
The way in
walk in — the seats are first come first serve for walk in only, the room mostly saves room for walk ins at its tables and bar, and tonight it runs until midnight
Why we say so
Their own site states the seats are “always first come first serve for walk in only,” that they “mostly save room for walk ins at our tables and bar,” and that Friday & Saturday run “TIL MIDNIGHT” — re-read at their site today.
Dutch Kills
Long Island City
Long Island City's foundational cocktail bar — hand-crushed ice, tin ceiling, a horseshoe bar pouring classics like the American Trilogy since 2009. Start with dinner elsewhere or don't: the snacks are honest, the drinks are the point, and Saturday runs to 3am.
The way in
walk in — there is no reservation system at all; a stool at the horseshoe bar is the whole arrangement, and Friday and Saturday pour 5pm to 3am
Why we say so
Their own site prints “Friday and Saturday 5PM until 3AM,” and no reservation link or booking page exists anywhere on it — re-read at their site today.
None of these work tonight? Tell us what does — $12.
Your party, your neighborhood, your hour. One person researches tonight and sends three to five rooms with the way in, under 10 minutes.
We loaded every one of these pages ourselves before writing this. Check their hours again before you put your coat on.
Tonight’s five are here.
