Tablenight

Sun 18 Oct

This was Sunday, October 18.

Five return guests tonight, every policy line re-read at each room’s own site this afternoon. A Hudson-side park café where every table answers to the queue, a Greek room on Division Street that keeps its tables for whoever walks in, a Second Avenue late-night room that is walk-in only until 2am, the Seventh Avenue pastrami landmark that takes no reservations, and a Village hamburger pub that has never kept a booking book. Sunday night, no card and no login — the door is the reservation.

We never hold, resell or book a table. Availability moves minute to minute, so go early rather than late.

Ellington in the Park

Upper West Side

An open-air café and bar set inside Riverside Park at 105th, on the Hudson itself — drinks and dinner over the water, picnic-table ease, and the whole room open to the October air. In a neighborhood of booked dining rooms, this one belongs to the park and to whoever is standing in it.

The way in

walk in — no reservations are taken at all and every table answers to the queue; the doors run 11am to 11pm today

Why we say so

Their own site states “We do not take reservations at Ellington in the Park,” with tables “on a first come first served basis,” and their schedule reads “Su 11:00-23:00” — re-read at their site today. If it pours, they post hour updates on Instagram; their Broadway sibling is a different room and books on Resy.

Kiki’s

Lower East Side

The wood-beamed Greek room at Division and Orchard — grilled octopus, lemon potatoes, saganaki with honey and lemon, and carafes of house wine that keep a table talking long after the plates are cleared. The booking book is for the big parties; the rest of the room belongs to whoever walks in.

The way in

walk in — walk-ins are always welcome, with booking kept for groups of four and over; Sunday the room runs noon to 11pm

Why we say so

Their own site states “Walk-ins welcome — reservations recommended for groups of 4+,” and their reservations page repeats “Walk-ins are always welcome. For groups of 4 or more, we recommend booking ahead,” with hours of “Mon & Sun 12 PM – 11 PM” — re-read at both pages today.

Paradise Lost

East Village

The late-night room on Second Avenue that keeps its lights on when the avenue has gone quiet — a full bar, a real kitchen, and doors open until 2am every night of the week. Nothing in the house is set aside for a booking; the door seats everybody.

The way in

walk in — the room is walk-in only, 5pm to 2am every night, parties of eight or fewer, strictly 21 and over

Why we say so

Their own homepage prints “5PM to 2AM Every Night,” “Walk-in Only,” “No Parties Larger than 8” and “Paradise Lost is strictly 21+” — re-read at their site today.

Carnegie Deli

Midtown

The 1937 pastrami landmark on Seventh Avenue at 54th — sandwiches stacked past the point of reason, matzo ball soup, and a cheesecake slice the size of a doorstop. Eighty-nine years on, the counter still answers to whoever is standing at it.

The way in

walk in — the deli takes no reservations and opens daily from 11am to 10pm, counter or table, takeout always

Why we say so

Their own flagship page prints “No Reservations. Takeout Available.” beside “Open daily, 11am to 10pm” — re-read at their site today.

Corner Bistro

West Village

The West Village hamburger pub — long church-pew tables, a wall of dollar bills, and a beer-and-cheddar burger that outlived every trend on the block. The tag line has been the same for decades because the policy never changed.

The way in

walk in — the bistro takes no reservations at either of its rooms, first come first served, and the West Village door runs 10am to 2am Sunday through Wednesday

Why we say so

Their own site states “No reservations, walk-ins only” with West Village hours of “Sunday - Wednesday 10:00 AM - 2:00 AM” — re-read at their site today, and tonight is a Sunday inside that window.
