Tue 20 Oct
This was Tuesday, October 20.
Five return guests tonight, every policy line re-read at each room’s own site this afternoon. An izakaya around the corner from the Essex Street crossing that takes walk-ins first, a basement party of bar lights and no bookings, a Red Hook smokehouse that feeds the counter until it sells out, a West Village burger bar with no reservation book and a Tuesday that runs to 2am, and the 7th Avenue deli that has never seated anyone by appointment. Tuesday night, no card and no login — the door is the reservation.
We never hold, resell or book a table. Availability moves minute to minute, so go early rather than late.
Kiki’s
Lower East Side
The corner izakaya on Division Street — katsu sando, kakuni sliders, highballs mixed hard, and a green-glowing room that hums from noon until midnight. The walk-ins are the house style: small tables tend to go to whoever is standing at the door, and only the big groups are asked to plan ahead.
The way in
walk in — walk-ins are always welcome, groups of 1 to 3 typically get seated without a reservation, and on Tuesday the doors run 12pm to 12am
Why we say so
Their own reservation page states “Walk-ins are always welcome.” and “Groups of 1–3 can typically be seated without a reservation.”, with hours of “Tue – Sat 12 PM – 12 AM Mon & Sun 12 PM – 11 PM” — re-read at their site today.
Paradise Lost
East Village
The basement on Second Avenue where the night goes long — a bar room of red light and low ceilings, vinyl on the speakers, and a strictly grown-up crowd that came in off the sidewalk like you will. Nothing in the house is set aside for a booking, and the doors run five to two, every night.
The way in
walk in — the room is walk-in only, opens 5pm and runs to 2am every night, with no parties larger than 8 and a strict 21-plus door
Why we say so
Their own homepage prints “Walk-in Only”, “5PM to 2AM Every Night”, “No Parties Larger than 8” and “Paradise Lost is strictly 21+” — re-read at their site today.
Hometown Bar-B-Que
Red Hook
The smokehouse at the end of Van Brunt — brisket on white bread, pork belly with pickles, corn pudding and a long communal room under the beams. The line moves like a ritual, the counter decides tonight’s menu, and the bay a few steps away is where the walk ends.
The way in
walk in — the counter is first come, first served until the day’s cook sells out, and on Tuesday the doors run noon to 9pm
Why we say so
Their own site states “we offer walk-up service to our counter on a first-come, first-served basis—until we sell out” with hours of “Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday Noon – 9pm … Closed Mondays” — re-read at their site today.
Corner Bistro
West Village
The corner bar at 4th and Jane that has poured the same burger-and-beer ritual for half a century — mugs of ale, paper-laden tables, cash from the ATM on premises, and a Tuesday crowd that owns the room after ten. Nothing in the house is set aside for a booking; there is no book.
The way in
walk in — no reservations and walk-ins only, cash on the bar, and on Tuesday the doors run 10am to 2am
Why we say so
Their own site prints “No reservations, walk-ins only” for the West Village room at 331 W 4th St, with hours of “Sunday - Wednesday 10:00 AM - 2:00 AM” — re-read at their site today.
Carnegie Deli
Midtown
The 7th Avenue deli that has overstuffed sandwiches since 1937 — pastrami stacked a forearm high, matzo ball soup the size of a bowl itself, cheesecake for the table, and a dining room where the seating plan has always been whoever arrived. It runs on takeout too, but the room is the point.
The way in
walk in — the deli takes no reservations, and the doors run 11am to 10pm every day
Why we say so
Their own flagship page prints “Open daily, 11am to 10pm.” and “No Reservations. Takeout Available.” — re-read at their site today.
None of these work tonight? Tell us what does — $12.
Your party, your neighborhood, your hour. One person researches tonight and sends three to five rooms with the way in, under 10 minutes.
We loaded every one of these pages ourselves before writing this. Check their hours again before you put your coat on.
Tonight’s five are here.
