A wood-beamed Greek room on the corner of Division and Orchard, all lemon potatoes, grilled octopus and sub-$30 carafes of house wine, with some of the best people-watching downtown.

An old-school Italian dining room on a crooked brick stretch of Henry Street, cash only, paper-lined tables, a fritto misto worth ordering twice. It reads like a nicer sitcom kitchen.

A big, bright Cantonese hall at the edge of Chinatown with lazy Susans, whole fried crabs and a wonton soup that arrives in a bowl big enough to bathe in. BYO, so bring the riesling.

A tiny, glowing Mexican room on Hamilton Place around an open kitchen — masa pancakes in the morning, birria bone marrow at night, and the feeling that a piano concert could break out at any moment.
