Mon 5 Oct
This was Monday, October 5.
Five rooms where Monday needs no app: the Chinatown original holds its parties of two at the door, a quiet Upper East Side icon and an UWS wine bar take nobody's booking, and the ramen counter in Bushwick books no one at all. Four are in Manhattan, one in Brooklyn, and none of them asks for a card.
We never hold, resell or book a table. Availability moves minute to minute, so go early rather than late.
Nom Wah Tea Parlor
Chinatown
The dim sum parlor that opened Doyers Street in 1920 — formica and red vinyl down a crooked alley the guidebooks still round to. Monday is the night its bigger tables sit in the Resy queue and its two-tops belong to whoever shows up at the door.
The way in
walk in if you're a party of two — the parlor takes parties of two at the door only, on every day it's open, while parties of three to five book through Resy for Mondays through Thursdays; open 11am to 9pm every day
Why we say so
Their own FAQ states "Parties of 2 are accepted only as walk-ins on all days" and "We are open everyday from 11 AM to 9 PM, including all major holidays."
J.G. Melon
Upper East Side
The Upper East Side's hamburger institution since 1972 — a potato-skin-and-beer room with watercolor cows on the walls and a line that proves the burger was right all along. On a Monday night the wait is a conversation, not a campaign.
The way in
walk in — the room takes no reservations at all, and stays open 11:30am to 3am Monday through Saturday, with the kitchen serving to 2:30am on weeknights
Why we say so
Their own hours page lists "No Reservations" and "Monday-Saturday: 11:30am to 3am (mon-thurs kitchen closes at 2:30am)".
Vin Sur Vingt
Upper West Side
A corner French wine bar on 84th Street with a long Happy Hour pour list and a chalkboard energy that runs from a 3:30 afternoon opening past midnight. A Monday glass of Côtes du Rhône at the bar beats a booking anywhere.
The way in
walk in — the bar takes no reservations at all, first come first served, and pours Monday from 3:30pm to 1am
Why we say so
Their own location page states "No reservations. First come, first serve" with "Monday: 3:30pm - 1:00am".
Cull & Pistol
Chelsea
The oyster-and-lobster room inside Chelsea Market, all dark wood and raw-bar light, pouring as a serious beer-and-shellfish bar. Reservations are a convenience here, not a condition — the door takes you straight to the horseshoe.
The way in
walk in — the room books tables through OpenTable but says reservations are not required and to just drop by, and serves Monday 11:30am to 10pm
Why we say so
Their own FAQ states "reservations are not required. We’d love for you to just drop by" with hours "Monday-Saturday: 11:30am-10:00pm".
ICHIRAN Brooklyn
Bushwick
The tonkotsu specialist's New York flagship in Bushwick — individual counter booths, a red-pepper dial on every tray, and a broth that never touches an app. Order by ticket, eat in your own booth, leave restored.
The way in
walk in — the counter books no reservations at all, seating Monday 11:30am to 10pm, though it may stop seating customers 40 to 60 minutes before closing
Why we say so
Their own location page states "Indoor seating only. No reservations." with "HOURS: Monday - Thursday 11:30 AM - 10:00 PM" and "We may STOP seating customers 40 - 60 MIN BEFORE closing time."
None of these work tonight? Tell us what does — $12.
Your party, your neighborhood, your hour. One person researches tonight and sends three to five rooms with the way in, under 10 minutes.
We loaded every one of these pages ourselves before writing this. Check their hours again before you put your coat on.
Tonight’s five are here.
